Every time a service company opened up this homeowner's air handler, it was full of mold, about three times a year. The previous company's answer was to keep adding UV lights until there were three of them. The mold kept coming back.
UV lights don't stop mold in an AC that wasn't installed correctly. The real problem here was poor airflow. We pulled the unit, rebuilt the opening so enough air could move through it, reinstalled it correctly and added better filtration. We took out the extra UV light because it wasn't needed.
Six to seven months later, we opened it back up without having cleaned it in between. The inside of the unit and the drain pan were still clean, with no mold, and her electric bill had dropped from about $121 to $75.
