About This Video

This homeowner's AC kept losing refrigerant. He called three different companies. One was too busy. Another told him there was a leak somewhere but couldn't find it. Another just added refrigerant and left without looking for the leak at all.

We found the leak in about 15 minutes. It took longer to take the covers off than to find it. Instead of selling him a new unit, we repaired the leak so a system that should last many more years keeps running.

Adding refrigerant without finding the leak only puts off the problem. Finding the actual cause is what fixes it.

George: Let's go through the story. Give me the history.

Homeowner: The first guy, I called him, it was an emergency. He said, "Oh, we're booked up." He didn't have any space. I had an emergency, and he said he was too busy.

George: Okay. And the next one?

Homeowner: I got another one. He said I had a leak in the refrigerant someplace. I asked him, "Can you fix it?"

George: So you had the leak about a year ago?

Homeowner: Yes. He said he couldn't fix it. He couldn't find it, it was so hidden.

Homeowner: Then the second company, the same thing. He didn't even touch it.

George: So he didn't look for the leak, he just put refrigerant in there?

Homeowner: Right.

George: Wow. Let's not mention names. And the last company?

Homeowner: [inaudible]

George: What happened with the last company?

Homeowner: [inaudible]

George: When they built the house, the unit inside is the same one, from 2004?

Homeowner: [inaudible] After three years, they changed it.

George: After three years they changed it? Wow. The inside unit is a Trane. That's a good unit, and a unit should last 20 years or more. They can last a long time if they're taken care of right.

George: So the leak is right here. We found the leak in 15 minutes, right? The leak is right here. You saw it too.

Homeowner: Yes.

George: So we found the leak in 15 minutes, while three other companies were telling him otherwise. It took us more time to take the covers off than to find it.

Homeowner: Those people, I won't use them for service anymore.

George: I don't blame you. We didn't try to sell you a new unit. Instead, we're going to fix the leak, and we're going to get this thing to work another five-plus years.

Homeowner: Okay. All right.
